I tried flushing out the ants with water from a water fountain so that I could eat the apple, but these ants were tenacious in staying in the tunnels, unwilling to budge.
I watched a few strays that have been dislodged from their tunnels by my bites.
After meandering around for a while, they eventually found a tunnel, then immediately plunged in to join the other ants in there, refusing to come back out.
So these tunnels served to collect fluid, and a little fermentation turned the juice into an alcohol-rich cider.
Those ants were making moonshine and getting drunk in their little wine "cellars"; no wonder I could not dislodge them!
