Subject: RE: book club meeting: Thu 4/15

Present: Jim, Wendy, and Peter. We discussed "The Founding
Fish" by John McPhee.

This happened to be an appropriate time to read a book about
shad, since this is the time of year when "shadbush" start to
bloom, or when shad start to make their spawning runs up the
east coast rivers - although the shad spawning period is May
- July. Their urge tp swim up the river to spawn is probably
explained by the better chance of survival of young who can
get first bite at the plankton in upstream waters.

Our next meeting will be Thu 6/17, 7pm, the book will be
"Ancient Life of the Great Lakes Basin" by J. Alan Holman.
