Subject: book club meeting: Thu 12/5 Present: Duane, Jim, Beth, Wendy, Sue, Peter. We discussed "Thornapples: The Comings, Goings, and Outdoor Doings of a Naturalist" by Jim Fergus. Many observations in the book led to excusrions into topics like how the toes of the Brown Creeper are arranged (3 forward, 1 back, like all passerines, but with long, curved toes for climbing). We'll have to explore some of the wild edibles: I'll see if I can find sumac and elderberry fruit to make some jelly, but can anyone find mayapples in the fall?!? I still haven't figured out how to make a cicada carcass sing. Our next meeting will be Thu 2/6, 7pm; the book will be "Guide to Nature in Winter", by Donald Stokes. A possible book for the meeting after that is "Miracle Under the Oaks", by William K. Stevens. Happy readings over the holidays, everyone! Peter http://www.wideopenwest.com/~peterwchen/book.html
